Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler

Jive Records statement:

It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). Jive Records' President and CEO Barry Weiss states: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Butler's father was a trumpet player who played professionally with Solomon Burke. Outside of his father, the 33-year old rapper's influences varied, ranging from Bobby Bland, Jimmy McGriff, the 1960's Motown artists to Run DMC. Butler met his inseparable partner Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in high school where they formed UGK. In 1992, the duo signed to Jive Records and went on release a total of eight albums for the label. They earned their highest achievement earlier this year when their most recent album, UGK (Underground Kingz), debuted in the number one position on the album pop chart. According to the New York Times, UGK "helped inspire a generation of Southern hip-hop stars, from OutKast to Lil Wayne."

Bun B is not available for comment at this time.

His current smash “Kiss, Kiss” Featuring T-Pain is now the #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, and is in the top 10 across five individual Billboard charts; #1-Hot Digital Songs, #1-Hot Digital Tracks, #3-Hot 100 Airplay, #6-Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and #6-Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. UGK’s latest hit, the dazzling soulful smash single “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You) Featuring OutKast,” features the multi-platinum Grammy winners OutKast with appearances by Three 6 Mafia, David Banner and Gipp of Goodie Mob. The instant video classic, which contains a memorable wedding scene that has to be seen to be believed was directed by Bryan Barber and is currently playing on MTV, MTV2 and BET.


UGK put the south on the map in 1988 with their first album release The Southern Way. Since then, the group has maintained a presence in the rap world with albums, mixtapes, indie releases and cameos on numerous prominent artists’ tracks. In 2000, they made a high-profile appearance on Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin.” In 2005, Bun B released his first solo album Trill. The gold-certified CD debuted at #6 on the Hot 200 Billboard Charts and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Album Chart. Pimp C released his solo album Pimpalation in summer 2006. The solo effort debuted at #3 on the Top 200 and at #1 on the Hip-Hop and R&B Charts according to Billboard.

New York, NY - Jive recording artist Justin Timberlake adds special guests to his 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow. Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, and Kenna have been chosen to open on specific European dates of the wildly popular and critically well received 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow, which kicked off April 24 in Belfast, Ireland.



The 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow, which already includes an exceptional performance by mega-producer Timbaland, adds Kenna as the first of three special guests on May 8th in Birmingham. Kenna who arrived on the music scene with the highly praised album, New Sacred Cow, will open for Justin for six dates and finish his part of the tour on May 19th in Nottingham. Kenna is scheduled to release his latest effort, Make Sure They See My Face, later this summer. Natasha Bedingfield, who to date has sold over 6.1 million units worldwide of her #1 UK debut album Unwritten, takes over where Kenna left off and hits the stage for 21 dates. She will open up for Justin in Paris on May 22nd and will end her leg of the tour in Antwerp, Belgium on July 27th. Natasha’s sophomore album N.B. was recently released in the UK. Rounding off the trio of hit making special guests is 3-time Grammy award winner and multi-platinum artist Fergie. Fergie’s solo debut, The Dutchess, has spawned three #1 singles “Fergalicious”, “London Bridge” and “Glamorous.” Starting on July 1st in Dublin Fergie will take over opening duties for the tour and conclude on the final date of the 2007 FutureSex/LoveShow on July 10th in London.
